To celebrate anniversary, “Soul Train” theme gets new Philly sheen
(March 23, 2021) For those of us who were glued every Saturday to the iconic music and dance television show SoulTrain, the soul jam “T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia)” is an old friend. Recorded by the Philadelphia International Records house band, M.F.S.B. (Mother, Father, Sister, Brother) along with vocal trio The Three Degrees, the 1974 song was an instant smash, shooting to the top of the pop and soul charts – and is considered by some to be the first disco #1.
It wasn’t long after that it became known as the familiar theme song to Soul Train, and further cemented its legacy as one of the most memorable songs of the decade.
Now, as part of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Philadelpia International Records, noted mixologist Tracy Young has remixed “T.S.O.P.,” providing a new version that simply pops from the speakers. It’s a great new look at an old friend. Check it out below, and tell us what you think.
